Are you looking for a longer cruise?

The Explore Disko Bay Expedition Micro Cruise forms part of our longer 24 day Greenland Pioneer Cruise which explores the entire east and west coast of Greenland.

The Voyage

The voyage commences at the remote town of Ilulissat, 220 miles north of the Arctic circle. We will explore the neighbouring Ilulissat Icefjord, a UNESCO World Heritage, home to some of the biggest icebergs on earth. From there we will explore Disko Island, enjoying the beautiful nature, glaciers, icebergs and coastline before returning to Ilulissat.

Ilulissat Icefjord

One of the most famous areas in Greenland, the Ilulissat Icefjord was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2004. It is home to the most productive glacier in the Northern Hemisphere, the Jakobshavn Glacier. Huge icebergs, some up to a kilometre in height, are hurled into the fjord making it one of the most awe-inspiring places on the planet.

Disko Bay

The largest open bay in West Greenland, Disko Bay is the perfect place to explore. From thousands of icebergs, to remote settlements and an abundance of wildlife this is one of our favourite places to cruise in West Greenland. The bay is home to a variety of whales including bowheads, humpbacks, narwhals, orcas and pilot whales which are frequently sighted in amongst the ice. There are numerous places to explore ashore and hike including remote settlements and beautiful landscapes.

Flexible Itinerary

The day to day plan is to visit remote anchorages and use the Zodiac landing craft to go ashore and explore. Our itinerary is kept flexible to allow the captain and expedition guide to make the most of the ice and weather conditions which can dictate what is possible. Unlike large cruise ships, this flexible approach helps us to see and experience more.

He started taking pictures in the Whitbread Round the World Race while crewing onboard Drum, owned by Simon le Bon and skippered by Skip Novak.  His pictures have been published in magazines all over the world, including National Geographic and in particular Yachting World. His own signature calendars have documented yachting for more than 30 years.

Why A Small Expedition Vessel?

We believe a small expedition vessel is the best way to experience Greenland in a closeup and personal way. Travelling with just 12 guests in total and a guide feels more like travelling with a small group of friends than a typical cruise. Landing in remote settlements with a small group of people will give you the chance to encounter local Greenlandic people. There is no waiting to join a Zodiac as there is space for everyone onboard. Find out why we prefer small ships to larger ships here.

Is a Small Expedition Vessel Right For Me?

A small expedition vessel offers a comfortable and spacious platform to explore  Greenland. She is smaller than an expedition cruise ship with the huge benefit of offering a more intimate and personal experience with just 12 guests. Inside there is a communal saloon area to warm up in after a day in the cold.

This voyage takes place along a mixture of sheltered fjords and open coastline. The Captain will make decisions based on the weather to ensure the most comfortable and safe experience.

The Expedition Vessel

Step aboard M/V Togo a classic expedition vessel.

Togo is a 102ft /31m motor yacht, custom built in 1965 by legendary Dunston Shipyard and last refitted in 2018. Originally built as North Sea trawler she was converted into Lloyd’s safety vessel in 1980s, then into a Yacht with extensive refit 2012 and upgraded to expedition yacht in 2018.

Togo has a well-appointed galley and mess room, elegant and comfortable mahogany paneled salon with bar and kitchenette. Her deck areas are spacious with semi-enclosed sides. She is a sturdy vessel with elegant sheer, sails with abundant intimacy from the bygone era of tramp steamers.
