An intrepid expedition on an East Greenland cruise on a small, capable expedition ship with just 16 guests. Explore Scoresby Sund, the longest natural fjord system in the world. We will encounter giant icebergs, untouched landscapes and sail through steep sided fjords. During the days we will make shore landings to explore the untouched wilderness. All this with 2 expert guides and just 12 guests.

The Voyage

Day 1 Charter flight from Reykjavik (Iceland) to Constable Pynt (Greenland). Join ship in the evening.

Day 2 -8 Exploring Scoresby Sund. Each day will be spent expedition cruising and exploring the beautiful landscapes of this untouched wilderness. We will cruise iceberg filled fjords, do short hikes in the wilderness accompanied by the expedition team and explore by Zodiac. There is the option to try out the onboard kayaks or attempt a polar snorkel (extra charge).

Our plan if conditions allow will be to circumnavigate Milne Island.

Day 9 Disembark and return charter flight to Reykjavik.

Greenland Cruise Day by Day

Day 1

Join MV Polarfront in Greenland

The first step of the expedition is to fly from Reykjavik in Iceland to a remote landing strip at Constable Point within Scoresby Sund on a private charter flight. On landing you will be met by the ships crew who will transport you via Zodiac to MV Polarfront ready for the expedition to begin. After a safety briefing from the captain we will begin our voyage into the wilderness.

Days 2-4

Exploring Scoresby Sund

Viking Bay & Danmark Island The plan is to sail along the glaciated Volquart Boons Coast on the south banks of Scoresbysund. Here you can enjoy the sights of one glacier after another for miles. Sailing west we will find Vikingebugt (or Viking Bay). It’s known for its impressive basalt columns stacked along the shoreline. We will attempt a zodiac cruise at the foot of these vertiginous cliffs.

Not far from Vikingebugt lies Danmark Ø. The island is home to the remains of a long-abandoned Inuit settlement. This well-preserved archeological site shows the ancient winter and summer houses, as well as evidence of their arctic lifestyle. We might take the zodiac for a closer look at the vast glacier front and then disembark for a hike.

Days 4-8

Exploring Scoresby Sund

Røde Fjord & Hare Fjord Navigating through a maze of icebergs we will attempt to sail into some of the smaller branches of the fjord system, Røde Fjord and Hare Fjord. This might take us to Røde Ø, the Red Island. This beautiful red sandstone island looks like the surface of planet Mars.

Ø Fjord & Sydkap If we are able to continue our voyage north you’ll get to see one of the most impressive fjords in the world: Ø Fjord. This strait is around 74 km long, with high mountains on each side and colossal icebergs silently floating in the calm water. Many of these ice giants are stationary, anchored to the bottom of Scoresby Sund, creating an almost alien setting.

Day 9

Ittoqqortoormiit & Flight Home

Our plan is to visit the remote settlement of Ittoqqortoormiit during the last days of the expedition. This settlement is home to just 400 Greenlandic people and is cut off by the sea ice for many months of the year.

On the final morning the crew will take you to the landing strip ready for the charter flight to take you back to Iceland.

This is a real expedition and the above itinerary is a guide only and is subject to weather and ice conditions in the fjord which may prevent access to some areas. Our expedition team will ensure you see a smuch as possible during your voyage with us.

Inside This Greenland Cruise

Our trips are aimed at anyone with a passion for exploring the Arctic with a small group of like minded individuals on a comfortable small ship cruise and include :

Exploration

We will explore areas within Scoresby Sund that are very rarely visited. This is a chance to experience a true, untouched wilderness in a small group.

Stunning Scenery

We will encounter mighty glaciers, cruise tranquil steep-sided fjords and spend time outside exploring the beautiful untouched wilderness.

Climate Compensated

Caring for the environment is what we do. For this Greenland cruise we plant trees in Greenland to offset the emissions. As a member of AECO, we follow strict guidelines to ensure minimal disturbance to wildlife and natural sites.

Expedition Leader and Guide

An aspect of our journeys is to learn about the place you are visiting. Our onboard guides are the core of what we do and will share their passion and knowledge of Greenland throughout the trip. We offer the best guide to guest ratio available.

Zodiac landing craft for shore landings

Shore landings are the essence of every expedition and your guides will take you exploring on a daily basis. The vessel is equipped with landing craft that can be used to reach remote beaches so you can experience the wilderness firsthand.

Expedition Vessel With 16 Guests

We believe the best way to experience an environmentally sensitive place such as the Arctic is with a small group of travelers. New expedition cruise ships now take up to 350 passengers, we believe smaller is better.
