svalbard cruise

Join Secret Atlas on a 10-day Greenland cruise to explore the rarely visited Scoresby Sund on the remote East coast of Greenland. Departing from Akureyri in Iceland, we will sail a cross the Denmark Strait and enter the outstanding natural beauty of Scoresby Sund where we will spend the next 7 days exploring. This expedition is ideal for those wanting to spend the maximum amount of unhurried time ashore.

What makes this trip even more special is our vessel takes just 48 guests. When you are ashore you will be in a small group. Travelling on a small expedition vessel gives us more flexibility, more time ashore and allows us to visit landing sites that the large cruise ships can’t visit.

East Greenland Highlights

  • A small group experience of just 48 guests.
  • A rare opportunity to join an in-depth exploration of Scoresby Sund an area of outstanding natural beauty.
  • Encounter some of the largest icebergs on the planet against the stunning landscapes of East Greenland.
  • Comfortable, and intimate ice-strengthened expedition vessel with sauna.
  • Visit a remote Greenlandic settlement.
  • Cruise steep-sided iceberg-filled fjords, pristine landscapes, and glaciers.
  • This trip gives you maximum time ashore.  All guests can fit in the Zodiacs and land at the same time.
  • Numerous opportunities to photograph Scoresby Sund’s landscapes and ice from the ship and shore.
  • This Greenland cruise is led by highly experienced expedition leaders.

Day 1

Akureyri, Iceland

Welcome to Akureyri, the whale watching capital of Iceland. In the afternoon we embark on the Polar Pioneer for a truly unique expedition to explore a rarely visited area of East Greenland. This tough, ice strengthened expedition vessel will be our comfortable home and base for exploring for the next 9 nights.

After settling into your cabin there will be a full safety briefing and an introduction from the expedition team. You will meet the experts who will be your guides for the duration of your voyage who have extensive knowledge about East Greenland, the history, wildlife and geology.

In the afternoon we will sail out of Akureyri and head across the Denmark Strait to Scoresby Sund in East Greenland.

Day 2

Cross the Denmark Strait

During our day at sea our passionate expert guide team will host a series of educational lectures about the wildlife, history and culture of Greenland and Scoresby Sund. As we approach the coast of East Greenland we will see the looming mountains that line the coast and encounter our first icebergs drifting on the East Greenland current.

Days 3 to 8

Exploring Scoresby Sund

We have allowed enough time to do an extensive exploration of Scoresby Sund and will make landings in remote wilderness areas on a daily basis. Our plan is to circumnavigate Milne Island which is deep inside the fjord system. You will encounter some of the largest icebergs on earth floating through steep sided fjords, encounter mystical landscapes and do short hikes in the virtually unexplored wilderness. Conditions inside the fjord system sheltered and cruising through the remote landscape is all part of the experience.

If time and conditions allow, we plan to visit the remote settlement of Ittoqqortoormiit, home to just 400 Greenlandic people, to get an insight into their life and culture.

The beauty of Polar Pioneer is that all our guests can Zodiac cruise or visit the shore at the same time. The process of going ashore is much more efficient than a larger ship so our guests get to spend more time exploring and less time waiting.

Day 9

At Sea

After 7 nights exploring Scoresby Sund we will bid farewell to this remote wilderness and set sail for Iceland. Our expedition team will continue the educational presentations. It’s a good chance to relax, warm up in the sauna and enjoy a drink at the bar.

The expedition leader will do a recap of the voyage and it is an opportunity to share moments and photos with your fellow explorers.

Day 10

Akureyri, Iceland

In the morning we arrive back in Akureyri after our epic Greenland cruise to Scoresby Sund. After breakfast, we say our goodbyes after making new friends and sharing a wonderful adventure together.

The above itinerary is a guide only. A part of any Greenland adventure is the flexibility to take advantage of the weather and sea conditions. Our expedition leader will make sure you see as much as possible.

Our Greenland cruises are aimed at anyone with a passion for exploring the Arctic with a small group of like minded individuals on a comfortable small ship cruise and include :

small expedition ship

Expedition Vessel With 48 Guests

We believe the best way to experience an environmentally sensitive place such as the Arctic is with a small group of travellers. Newly launched expedition cruise ships now take up to 350 passengers, we believe smaller is better.

Expedition Leader & Guides

On this tour, we will be accompanied by an expedition leader and 4 additional guides that are knowledgeable and passionate about Greenland. We offer the best guide to guest ratio available.

Zodiac landing craft for shore landings

Shore landings are the essence of every expedition and your guides will take you exploring to photograph ashore. The vessel is equipped with a landing craft that can be used to shoot from. With our small groups, there is room for everyone in the Zodiacs at the same time, something you will not find on a larger vessel.

Climate Compensated

Caring for the environment is what we do. For every Greenland cruise we run we plant trees in Greenland to offset the emissions. We are a member of AECO and follow strict guidelines to ensure our trips don’t cause any disturbance to the wildlife or natural sites.

Expedition Motor Polar Pioneer

Step aboard Polar Pioneer a true polar expedition vessel

Polar Pioneer needs no introduction. She is a veteran expedition vessel with a proven track record exploring the polar regions. She returns in 2022 with a full refurbishment.

We love this vessel because she was built for the polar regions and is a very strong and capable vessel to explore the ice with. She takes just 48 passengers offering the lowest group numbers in Antarctica and South Georgia.

She has a large deck space with raised areas making her perfect for photography. She features a large passenger saloon with bar, and an onboard sauna to warm up in after a day in the cold.

She is crewed by a team of experts with decades of experience navigating polar waters, and is an ideal vessel for guests looking to go on a real expedition with an authentic expedition vessel.

There is accommodation for 48 guests across twins, triple cabins and suites. She is equipped with Zodiacs that can accommodate all guests for shore landings and exploring.

The Polar Pioneer can transit open water crossings with ease and comfort due to its integrated dynamic water ballast system, which guarantees a great reduction of rolling in heavy seas. As a result, Polar Pioneer is among one of the most stable vessels currently in operations in the Polar regions.
