svalbard cruise

Introduction

Explore Svalbard on a small ship expedition cruise with just 48 guests in total. This expedition takes place on the newly refitted Polar Pioneer, one of the smallest and most rugged expedition cruise ships visiting Svalbard, perfect for visiting the ice edge. On this expedition we will venture to the northern wilderness to explore the beautiful landscapes, wildlife and glaciers of north west Spitsbergen, home to an abundance of polar wildlife. Every day is an adventure and we will use the Zodiac landing craft to explore various sites of interest and to take short hikes ashore in the nature. This is an intimate small group experience with the minimum of one guide for every 10 guests.

Guiding is provided in English and German.

Day 1

Longyearbyen

You will step onboard Polar Pioneer in the port of Longyearbyen in the afternoon. After an introduction from our expedition leader and a safety briefing from the Captain, we set sail out through the majestic Adventfjord. As Longyearbyen disappears astern and we turn north, we wave goodbye to civilisation for the next 9 days. As we sail out through the Isfjord we will spend time on deck watching for the whales that frequent the waters.

Days 2-3

Prins Karls Foreland & Sea Ice

Every expedition is different and we base our choices around the weather conditions and potential wildlife sightings. Our plan is to head north at the start of the expedition. We plan to make our first shore landing in the area around Prins Karls Foreland which is home to Walrus colonies. If the conditions allow we will attempt to reach the edge of the sea ice which is a magical experience (although this can never be guaranteed).  Polar Pioneer is a tough ice strengthened vessel and in the right conditions we will attempt to sail through the ice.

Days 4-8

Exploring the North-West Coast

As we venture to the north west region of Spitsbergen we will encounter numerous glaciers and stunning Artic landscapes. Under the guidance of the expedition leader we will use the Zodiacs to go ashore and explore various places on a daily basis including glacier fronts, places of historical interest and wildlife sites. When ashore there will be the opportunity to do wilderness hikes which is the perfect way to experience the raw nature of the Arctic.

Days 9

Sailing South

As we sail back south we explore the area in and Kongsfjorden. Expect majestic glaciers, some of Svalbard’s most beautiful fjords and scenery from the decks. Here we encounter one of Svalbard’s most breathtaking sites, the Lilliehook glacier, one of Svalbard’s largest calving glacier fronts. We will spend time here witnessing nature’s beauty in its rawest form with the option of doing a wilderness hike to a neighbouring fjord.

Days 10

Longyearbyen

In the morning we arrive back at the port of Longyearbyen. After breakfast we say our goodbyes after making new friends and sharing a wonderful adventure together.

The above itinerary is a guide only. A part of any Arctic adventure is the flexibility to take advantage of the weather and ice conditions. Our expedition leader will make sure you see as much a possible.

Expedition Vessel With 48 Guests

We believe the best way to experience an environmentally sensitive place such as the Arctic is with a small group of travellers. New expedition cruise ships now take up to 350 passengers, we believe smaller is better.

icon-trip-Expedition-Leader

Expedition Leader and Guides

An aspect of our journeys is to learn about the place you are visiting. Our onboard guides are the core of what we do and will share their passion and knowledge of Svalbard throughout the trip. We have a team of expedition leader and 4 guides onboard offering the best guide to guest ratio available.

icon-trip-Zodiac-Craft

Zodiac landing craft for shore landings

Shore landings are the essence of every expedition and your guides will take you exploring on a daily basis. The vessel is equipped with 6 landing craft that can be used to reach remote beaches so you can experience the wilderness firsthand. The beauty of a small ship expedition is that everyone onboard can fit in a Zodiac at the same time, so no waiting to go ashore.

Climate Compensated

Caring for the environment is what we do. For every trip we run we plant trees in Greenland to offset the emissions. As a member of AECO, we follow strict guidelines to ensure minimal disturbance to wildlife and natural sites.

Expedition Motor Polar Pioneer

Step aboard Polar Pioneer a true polar expedition vessel

Polar Pioneer needs no introduction. She is a veteran expedition vessel with a proven track record exploring the polar regions. She returns in 2022 with a full refurbishment.

We love this vessel because she was built for the polar regions and is a very strong and capable vessel to explore the ice with. She takes just 48 passengers offering the lowest group numbers in Antarctica and South Georgia.

She has a large deck space with raised areas making her perfect for photography. She features a large passenger saloon with bar, and an onboard sauna to warm up in after a day in the cold.

She is crewed by a team of experts with decades of experience navigating polar waters, and is an ideal vessel for guests looking to go on a real expedition with an authentic expedition vessel.

There is accommodation for 48 guests across twins, triple cabins and suites. She is equipped with Zodiacs that can accommodate all guests for shore landings and exploring.

The Polar Pioneer can transit open water crossings with ease and comfort due to its integrated dynamic water ballast system, which guarantees a great reduction of rolling in heavy seas. As a result, Polar Pioneer is among one of the most stable vessels currently in operations in the Polar regions.
