svalbard cruise

Introduction

Join wildlife photographer Chase Teron on our most exciting, in-depth Svalbard photography expedition yet. On this voyage, we will venture further into the wilderness to explore and photograph the less-visited parts of Svalbard. 15 days allows us enough time to attempt to reach the Austfonna ice-cap where waterfalls tumble down vertical walls of ice, a stunning and rarely witnessed site.

Led by a veteran expedition leader we will aim to circumnavigate Spitsbergen and visit lots of secret places rarely visited by others. Photographs can expect to encounter sea ice, calving glaciers, a variety of arctic wildlife including the best chance of witnessing polar bears, and wild and remote landscapes.

Svalbard Photography Expedition Highlights

  • A rare opportunity to photograph the mighty Austfonna ice cap on the island of Nordaustlandet.
  • Explore rarely visited places in the furthest reaches of Svalbard led by a highly experienced expedition leader.
  • Develop your photography skills in the field with a highly experienced Arctic photographer.
  • Comfortable, and intimate ice-strengthened expedition vessel.
  • Encounter Svalbard’s wildlife. This trip has the best chance of encountering polar bears along with walruses, Arctic foxes, Svalbard reindeer, and whales.
  • Numerous opportunities to photograph Svalbard’s wild and stunning landscapes from the ship and shore.
  • Get up close and photograph glaciers and sea ice from the ship and Zodiacs.
  • Small, intimate group size of 12 photographers.

Svalbard Photography Expedition Day by Day

photography expedition in svalbard on a small boat

Days 1 and 2

Longyearbyen and Prins Karls Foreland

Our Svalbard photography expedition departs from the port of Longyearbyen in the afternoon. The overall schedule is flexible to allow us to open up as many photo opportunities as possible. As we leave the Isfjord we will spend lots of time out on the deck looking for whales which are common in this area.  We will visit the outer island of Prins Karls Foreland where we will do a shore landing to photograph a walrus colony on land and by Zodiac if conditions allow.

Days 3 to 6

Kongsfjord, the Ice Edge and North-west Spitsbergen

As we continue north we will enter the majestic Kongsfjord and explore the surrounding area. We will have the opportunity to photograph one of Svalbard’s largest calving glaciers from the ship and Zodiac. Our plan is to sail north and reach the sea ice which extends all the way to the North Pole and is a great area to photograph bears hunting on the sea ice. We will sail along the north coast of Spitsbergen keeping a lookout for wildlife including polar bears that inhabit the area.

Austfonna svalbard expedition micro cruise Polar Cruises

Days 7 to 10

Nordaustlandet and Hinlopen Strait

Our goal with this expedition is to reach the rarely visited remote island of Nordaustlandet and cruise along the Austfonna Ice Cap. Here we will photograph waterfalls tumbling over vertical walls of ice, a truly breathtaking sight, and not one that is photographed very often. Depending on the sea ice conditions, we aim to sail around Nordaustlandet. The other option is to head south through the Hinlopen Strait. Each day we will be using the Zodiacs to open up as many photo opportunities as possible in this stunning area.

Days 11 – 14

Southern Spitsbergen

We will follow the compass south and explore the region along the south coast of Spitsbergen. We will visit rarely visited landing sites and have lots of chances to photograph the breathtaking nature, wildlife, and scenery. As we round the southern tip of Spitsbergen, we will enter the area around Hornsund where we will have a day to explore and do some wilderness photography of the dramatic landscape. We will then set sail north along the coast towards Longyearbyen.

Day 15

Longyearbyen

Safely back in the port of Longyearbyen after our epic 15-day Svalbard photo expedition, we will enjoy a final breakfast together. We say our goodbyes and disembark in the morning after making new friends and sharing an incredible adventure together.

The above itinerary is a guide only. A part of any Arctic adventure is the flexibility to take advantage of the weather and ice conditions. Our expedition leader will make sure you see as much a possible.

Shore landings are the essence of every expedition and your guides will take you exploring to photograph ashore. The vessel is equipped with a landing craft that can be used to shoot from. With a small group, there is room for everyone and it offers the perfect opportunity to get great shots of sea ice, wildlife and glaciers.
